According to statistics, one in four women are victims of domestic violence. If you are a woman who is concerned your partner may physically assault you, here are three things you can do to help prevent it from happening.

Know the Signs

One of the first things you as a woman can do in order to prevent becoming a victim of domestic violence includes knowing the signs of abuse. If your partner has ever behaved in the following ways, it might be the first signs of abuse:

  • Doesn't want you to see friends or family
  • Has a need to monitor how you spend your time
  • Tries to control how you spend your money
  • Threatens to hurt you
  • Cannot control anger when drinking or doing drugs

If you feel you are being abused in any way, it's important to reach out to family, friends, your church, or a domestic violence organization right away. It is likely that the longer you wait, the worse the situation will become.

Put a Restraining Order in Place

If you feel you are in any kind of danger, it's relatively easy to get a restraining order against them. When a restraining order is in place, it makes it against the law for a potentially abusive or abusive person to come near you or come on to your property. They are also not supposed to contact you in any other way, including by e-mail, phone, or on social media. In order to file the restraining order, you'll need to do so at the courthouse of the county in which you reside.

Change Your Locks

Even if you have a restraining order in place, the perpetrator may still try to go on to your property. If they have a copy of your house key, it would be possible for them to get inside your home. In order to prevent this from happening, you may want to contact a residential locksmith, such as those at Venus & Mars Locksmith, to get your locks changed. Most locksmiths are available during all hours of the day and also provide emergency services. Some of them even install locks on garage doors and windows. For added security, a locksmith can also install an alarm system.

In order to protect yourself from domestic abuse, it's vital that you first know and understand the signs. If you do recognize some of the above signs in your partner, it's better to take further action right away, before it's too late.
