You never know when a quick stop to grab fuel or a drink could lead you to accidentally locking your keys in the car because, as humans, everyone will have that momentary lapse of thought that gets them in trouble. The worst part is, sometimes you lock your keys in your vehicle at a place that is not somewhere you would choose to stand around and wait for help. If you get stuck in a shady neighborhood because you are locked out of your vehicle, call a locksmith for help as soon as possible. Beyond that, there are a few helpful tips you can keep in mind to ensure you stay safe while you wait.

Stay in a well-lit area.

If your car is parked in a spot that has no overhead lighting or street lights nearby, the worst thing you can do is stay with it and wait for the locksmith to get to you. Instead, stay in areas where there is ample light, even if it means you have to stand and wait at the front of a business building. Being in the dark gives people up to no good the opportunity to come after you without anyone noticing.

Call a friend and ask them to wait with you.

Talking on your cell phone with a friend while you are stranded in the middle of a strange neighborhood is a good way to keep your own nerves in check. However, this is also a good way to call attention to nefarious people who may be waiting on their chance to catch you off guard, and being on the phone could easily be a dangerous distraction. Go ahead and call up a friend, but see if they would come and wait with you or pick you up until the locksmith arrives because there is always greater security when there is more than one person.

Head inside a local business.

Just standing and looking like you are stranded makes you look like an easy target. Not only will onlookers probably guess that you are in a sticky situation, this will also give people with an ulterior motive reason to approach you. If there is a business nearby of any type, go there and let them know you are stranded and ask if they would allow you to wait inside. Most will not mind at all if you quietly wait for the locksmith.
